in casey's ~nascent y2 app~ i put that their mama speaks (haitian) creole at home; she was raised in NYC so didn't go through the french schooling/bureaucracy her parents did, but creole was the main language for her growing up, too, and she's determined to keep it that way as much as she can. BUUUT creole is largely from french, so while the patterkids would have conversational fluency in creole, they can prob understand a reasonable amount of spoken french! if this works for you~
